Long Haul Trucking Jobs

Long haul trucking jobs are available despite the faltering economy. Older trucker are retiring and there are truckers that are always quitting for a number of reasons. Recently a lot of owner operators have turned in their rigs because of the rise in fuel prices and other expenses. Those owner operators that depended on freight from brokerages were often underbid and were forced to haul freight below their expense level.

The trucking companies with a solid customer base and that were able to keep their expenses down as much as possible were the long haul truck companies that survived.  And usually those are the trucking companies that are hiring. There are programs that will pay for a Vet’s CDL training school as well as the larger companies that also have CDL training schools allow for repayment of tuition as long as your long haul trucking career begins and lasts for a year with them.

A long haul trucking career is more than just driving a truck. There are plenty of rules and regulations to follow and keep track of. You will most often spend as much of your time going backwards as you do going forward. The trip isn’t over until you back into a dock and unload the freight where it’s supposed to go. Backing a tractor with a 53 foot trailer is the number one problem people have and is the most difficult to master. You can drive for years and still not be able to back up as smoothly and accurately as drivers that have been driving for many years.

Most trucking jobs involve more than just driving around. Many long haul trucking jobs require some sort of driver assistence or some kind of work besides driving from the truck driver. Even van and refrigerated drivers must stand, count, and inspect the freight as it’s being loaded onto their trucks. Tanker trailer drivers must get out and connect and disconnect hoses. Flatbed drivers must tie down and sometimes tarp their freight. Household driver are loading, unloading and inspecting furniture. The same thing goes for car haulers and livestock haulers.

For those older drivers looking for a second career, many don’t realize the actual physical work and long hours invovled in driving a truck. Granted, driving cross country is the best part, but in most cases it’s only one part of the job. There’s a lot more to truck driving than just driving a truck.
